چکیده

Extreme weather often contributes to crown fires, where the fire spreads from one tree crown to the next as a series of piloted ignitions. An important aspect in predicting crown fires is understanding the ignition of fuel particles. The ignition criterion considered in this work is the critical mass flux criterion – that a sufficient amount of pyrolysis gases must be generated for a diffusion flame to be established above the surface. An apparatus was built to measure the critical mass flux for sustained flaming ignition of woody materials for varying environmental conditions (heat flux and external oxidizer flow velocity). This paper reports the variation of measured critical mass fluxes for dead, dry poplar with externally applied radiant heat flux and oxidizer flow velocity. The critical mass flux is seen to agree qualitatively with those in the literature (around 13 g/ms) and to increase with increasing levels of heat flux and flow velocity. Future work will explore the changes in critical mass flux with fuel moisture content, species, and live fuels.

A Review on Ignition of Cellulose Materials under External Heat Flux

Ignition is the initial stage of burning the materials. The consequent flame spread over the materials, heat release rate, fire spread across the rooms, and other issues for building fires all depend on that. Numerous studies on the ignition of cellulose materials, especially wood, were reported in the literature. There are smoldering or glowing ignition (self-heating ignition) and flaming igni...

Ignition of Wood a Review of the State of the Art

This review encompasses the available practical and experimental data on the ignition of solid wood. Only solid, natural wood is considered, not sawdust, chips, or products that have been treated with fire retardants or other substances, nor is the ignition of living trees. Panel products such as plywood or particleboard have ignition properties very similar to solid wood, so the solid-wood res...

The role of secondary char oxidation in the transition from smoldering to flaming

The transition from forward smoldering to flaming in polyurethane foam is observed using indepth thermocouples and ultrasound probing. The experiments are conducted with small parallelepiped samples vertically placed in an upward wind tunnel. Three of the vertical sample sides are maintained at elevated temperature and the fourth is exposed to an upward oxidizer flow and a radiant heat flux. An...
